Marianne Nicolson (‘Tayagila’ogwa) is an artist of Scottish and Dzawada̱’enux̱w First Nations descent. The Dzwada̱’enux̱w People are a member tribe of the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw Nations of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Her training encompasses both traditional Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw forms and culture and Western European based art practice. She has completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (1996), a Masters in Fine Arts (1999), a Masters in Linguistics and Anthropology (2005) and a PhD in Linguistics, Anthropology and Art History (2013) at the University of Victoria. August 21 to 23, 2015 University of Alberta After Oil School Public Roundtable: Explorations and Experiments in the Future of Energy, Culture and Society Video Ruth Beer, a member of the Petrocultures Research Cluster, participated in After Oil School in Edmonton and gave a talk on her artwork related to the Trading Routes research project. “What Comes After Oil?” was a piece of a larger four-day event, the After Oil School. The After Oil School gathered experts in energy humanities from the University of Alberta and around the world to explore, critically and creatively, the social, cultural and political changes necessary to facilitate a full-scale transition from fossil fuels to new forms of energy. Also the executive director of Pacific Wild Ian McAllister spoke as a guest speaker at The Gulf of Georgia Cannery on June 9th 2015 during the ‘Herring Festival’. Situated in the same physical space as the Trading Routes exhibition, the programming at the ‘Herring Festival’ addressed many of the same themes as the visual art. Prince George, Tache, Fort St. James, Burns Lake, Unis'tot'en Camp, Smithers, Old Hazelton, Kitimat, Skidegate, Old Massett, Terrace, Quesnel and Prince Rupert Oil + Water Intersections Line in the Sand Line in the Sand Film Distribution Beginning on March 31st 2015, two video works created by Ruth Beer, Oil + Water (2:00m) and Intersections (4:30m), toured Pacific Northwest communities with the feature-length documentary Line in the Sand, directed by Tomas Borsa and J.P Marquis. The tour lasted nearly a month, commencing in Prince George at Canfor Theatre and travelling to both large and small communities including the Unis'tot'en Action Camp of the Wet’suwet’en nation who occupy their territory in the direct path of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline.
